Common Questions

Arboriculture & tree surgery — questions we're asked most

Straight answers for planning applicants, local authorities, and anyone dealing with a dangerous or storm-damaged tree.

What standard governs tree surveys for UK planning applications?

BS 5837:2012 is the British Standard that governs tree surveys for planning applications in the UK — it covers how trees are assessed, categorised, and protected in relation to design and construction. Treetex's qualified consultants produce BS 5837 tree surveys and Arboricultural Impact Assessments to the standard local planning authorities expect.

Are Treetex's tree surgeons NPTC qualified?

Yes. All climbing arborists hold relevant NPTC/CS units, including CS30 (felling small trees), CS31 (aerial tree work), and CS38 (climbing and rescue), and ground-based chainsaw operatives hold the appropriate NPTC certificates for crosscutting, felling, and processing — Treetex does not permit chainsaw work on any contract without the relevant certification.

Does Treetex offer 24/7 emergency tree removal?

Yes, Treetex operates a 24-hour emergency response service for storm-damaged trees, fallen trees blocking roads or access, and urgent hazards on public or private land. For a genuine emergency, call 01403 824972 directly — the line is monitored around the clock.

Can Treetex carry out tree work on public highways?

Yes. Highway and roadside tree work requires Chapter 8 traffic management, and Treetex's supervisors hold the relevant LANTRA Award, enabling us to set up and manage appropriate signing and guarding for carriageway operations for local authorities and highways agencies.

What's the difference between a BS5837 survey and a Visual Tree Assessment?

A BS5837 survey is the formal report required to support a planning application, assessing every tree on site against the proposed development. A Visual Tree Assessment (VTA) is a ground-level risk inspection used for ongoing stock management — checking a tree's condition and structural safety without the planning-specific reporting a BS5837 survey requires. Treetex carries out both.

What standard does Treetex follow for crown work?

All crown work — crown reduction, crown lifting, crown thinning, and deadwood removal — is carried out to BS3998 standards by NPTC-qualified arborists, whether the aim is managing scale, improving clearance, or improving light and airflow.
